Head of Centre

Professor Sine Larsen is a structural chemist with a background in X-ray crystallography and physical chemistry. Her present research interests include basic studies of intermolecular interactions, in particular among chiral molecules, and investigations of the relations between protein structure and function.

She has been the director of the Centre for Crystallographic Studies since 1994, when the centre was established at the Department of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen, as one of the 23 centres funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. She was the head of the Department of Chemistry 1977-78, and chaired the laboratory for Physical Chemistry 1987-1992. In December 1997, she was appointed as professor in structural chemistry at the University of Copenhagen.

Serving as an external examiner at the University of Ghana can be mentioned among her other academic assignments. She is a member of the editorial boards for Crystallography Reviews and Journal of Biological Inorganic Chemistry.

She was a member of the Danish Natural Science Research Council 1989-1993, and its Deputy Chairman 1991-1993. In addition she has chaired the Research Councils Committee for Supercomputing 1993-1996, and their ad hoc committee that made a "Review of Scientific Equipment in Denmark" published in 1995. She was the deputy chairman in the Danish Natural Science Research Councils committee for Synchrotron Radiation 1993-1994. Related international experience includes membership of CERC3, chairman of European Research Councils Chemistry Committees, 1990-1994, and member of the CERC3 executive committee 1992-1994.

Since 1985 she has been a member of the Danish National Committee for Crystallography. In 1996 she was elected General Secretary and Treasurer for the International Union of Crystallography, and is as such a member of its Executive Committee, and an ex officio member of all commissions of the union.
