Located in the Department of Biology, the Microscopy Facility is equipped for light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy, including specimen preparation. Capabilities include viewing details of samples using light and electron microscopes, and analyzing samples for elemental content. The facility conducts research, teaching, and consulting outside CMU.

Center for Geographic Information Science (CGISc) Back to top
The Geographic Information Science Center (CGISc) was established in 1994 to facilitate and handle the rapidly increasing amounts of spatially referenced data for central and northern Michigan.
The GIS Center, housed in the Department of Geography, is well equipped with hardware and software, enabling it to engage in many research projects evolving from grants, contracts, and various other sources. Database engines include both ORACLE and ACCESS. The Center acts as a repository for government data sets.
U.S. Bureau of the Census TIGER line files, Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) data, LandView III maps of selected EPA regulated sites, and NIMA digital maps are available for use by researchers and students.

The Michigan Geographic Alliance (MGA) is a network of teachers and geographers who are committed to using geographic content and skills to improve the educational experiences of Michigan K-12 students.
MGA is one of the nation's largest and most active state geographic alliances. It provides high-quality, low-cost in-service workshops for teachers and leadership in developing curriculum based on Michigan's Social Studies Content Expectations.

Polymeric Materials Science and
Technology Institute Back to top
The Polymeric Materials Science and Technology Institute serves as a base for interdisciplinary (chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, industrial engineering and technology) program in polymer science.
The Institute maintains research dedicated to the enhancement of polymer science applications in areas crucial to the economic development of the state and region; fosters cooperative academic/industrial efforts in polymer science, both in training and research; provides graduate training in polymer science; and responds to the needs of local industry for consulting services.
Areas of prominent research activity include: water-soluble polymers, polymer-supported organoplatinum antitumor agents, degradation/stabilization of vinylidene chloride copolymers, stabilization of PVC, permeation of flavor and aroma molecules in barrier plastic packaging, polymer synthesis (aryl ether ketones, dendrimers, aryl sulfones, aryl phosphines oxides, etc.), polymer characterization, controlled-release technology, polymer rheology, polymer processing, mathematical modeling of polymer dynamics and polymer flow properties, and the recycling of industrial plastics.

X-ray Crystallography Center Back to top
Crystallography is an interdisciplinary science bringing together physics, chemistry, biochemistry, geology, and material science in general, mathematics, and computer science. It can provide information about the content of investigated material, its structure, quality, and quantity, with details such as 3-D architecture of the molecules at the atomic level. X-ray analysis of single crystals can provide structural information about molecules of all calibers from few atoms to thousands of atoms.
The X-ray Crystallography Center provides single crystal X-ray diffraction data and structured analyses to CMU researchers as well as industry.

Software Engineering and Information Technology Institute (SEITI) Back to top
The Software Engineering and Information Technology Institute (SEITI) is an international cooperative research and development organization involving partnerships between Central Michigan University and industrial, academic, and governmental organizations involved in the information technology field.
Research if focused on the field of software engineering and information technology.
SEITI provides guidance, expertise, technical services, and excellent computing facilities to researchers. To facilitate the timely flow of current research developments into the market, the Institute helps connect industry needs to appropriate researchers, sponsors conferences and workshops, and offers short courses and tutorials.
