Department of Chemistry, Mississippi State University
The department shares a building with the Mississippi State Chemical Laboratory (MSCL). This combination greatly enhances the range of equipment available for graduate student and faculty use. Some of the major instruments are listed below:
NMR
Bruker AMX-600 - A 600-MHz spectrometer with z-gradient, inverse and heteronuclear capabilities.
Bruker AVANCE III - A 300 MHz spectrometer with CPMAS for solids as well as inverse and heteronuclear capabilities for liquids
Mass Spectrometry
Although there is no central mass spectrometery facility in the department, there are numerous mass spectrometers in the building. The majority are coupled to hplc or gc machines.
Optical Spectrometers
Bruker IFS-25 FT infrared spectrometer.
Midac FT infrared spectrometer.
X-Ray Crystallography
Bruker AXS x-ray unit with CCD detection
Other Instruments
conventional fluorometers (Aminco, Perkin-Elmer).
atomic absorption (Perkin-Elmer).
atomic emission (Jarrel-Ash).
several gas and liquid chromatographs.
And lots more in individual research groups (lasers, scanning electrochemical microscope, light scattering instruments, . . . )
Library Holdings
The Mitchell Memorial Library is adjacent to the Hand Chemical Laboratory. The MSU library system maintains a collection of more than 2,000,000 volumes and contains 57,007 journal/serial titles as either paid subscriptions, gifts or state/federal government documents. (This total includes print and electronic journal subscriptions).
Other Facilities
The Mississippi Research and Technology Park is being built on a 218-acre tract of land which adjoins the campus on the northern edge. Current tenants include a National Science Foundation supported Engineering Research Center (ERC), the Department of Energy supported Institute for Clean Energy Technology, and a business "incubator" program for emerging "high-tech" companies.
