My research interests in sea ice are its microstructure and physical properties, and observational monitoring. I am involved in International Polar Year education and outreach, through the University of Alaska Young Researcher's Network and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists, APECS.
After I studied at the United World College in New Mexico, USA, I returned to New Zealand to study Physics and Mathematics. After an M.Sc. in experimental Physics at Victoria University of Wellington , I had the great opportunity to combine my scientific interests with my love of the outdoors, and completed my Ph.D. on the thermal properties of sea ice and Antarctic permafrost.
At UAF I have worked on the electrical and dielectric properties of sea ice, and I am investigating the underlying microstructure of brine inclusions from a porous medium perspective. This has combined computational and laboratory work with fieldwork out of Barrow, Alaska.
I have co-taught at the graduate level at UAF. I co-founded the University of Alaska Young Researchers' Network to promote International Polar Year education and outreach activities at UAF and in and beyond the wider Fairbanks community. I serve on the Executive Committee of APECS, whose goals are to provide international, interdisciplinary networking and professional development for early career polar researchers.
