Research Capabilities
Carnegie Foundation has listed the University of Idaho as a research university with high research activity. The university houses nationally recognized interdisciplinary research institutes and centers in which faculty and student teams focus on specific research problems of state, regional and national interest. Internal core support research facilities are available for faculty to utilize in their research projects. Many colleges and individual laboratories have also developed recognized research programs.
UI science and engineering research faculty also are located in Idaho Falls, Boise and Post Falls. Additionally, the faculty of the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station (IAES) perform agricultural research on campus and at statewide research and extension centers in direct support of Idaho's agricultural communities. Other IAES faculty are present at UI experimental farms located across the state. The experiment station faculty also have strong research collaborations and share facilities with colleagues in the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Aberdeen, Boise, Dubois and Kimberly.
The UI is the lead institution of the Inland Northwest Research Alliance (INRA), an academic research consortium composed of University of Idaho, Washington State University, Idaho State University, University of Utah, Montana State University, Boise State University, Idaho State University and University of Montana. INRA facilitates the leveraging of new research and educational partnerships between the member institutions and the private sector, federal agencies and federal laboratories. INRA is currently partnering with Bechtel, Babcock-Wilcox Idaho (BBWI), in operating the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory near Idaho Falls.
Specific research and scholarly expertise of UI faculty are found in the Scholary Universe database.
